Why we built Jubbo

Everything a child learns from a screen, they learn while looking down. Jubbo asks them to look up and say something out loud, because that is the harder and more useful thing — a word you can recognise is not the same as a word you can say and be understood.

It has no display for the same reason. A box you cannot watch cannot become the thing a child stares at, and a device with nothing to browse cannot be browsed for an hour.

Most products in this shape are built to hold attention for as long as possible. Jubbo is built to give an activity a last question and then be quiet. That is a deliberate choice about what a toy for a child should be, and it is also the reason we are careful about the words on this site: a product that plays one bounded activity and stops is a different kind of thing from one that will talk for as long as a child will listen, and it should be described as what it is.
